First-Timer’s Tips for Spain & Portugal
If it’s your first time heading to the Iberian Peninsula, here are a few simple tips to make your trip even smoother:

City-hopping is easy. Spain and Portugal have excellent train networks (Renfe and Comboios de Portugal), and short flights between major cities are affordable. It’s easy to see two or three cities in one trip.

Stay central. Choose accommodations in historic city centers (like Lisbon’s Baixa or Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter) to be close to sights, dining, and public transportation. Bonus: you’ll feel more immersed in the culture.

Dine like a local. Meals happen later here! Lunch runs from 1–3 p.m., and dinner often starts after 8 p.m. Embrace the relaxed pace—it’s part of the experience.

Brush up on basics. A few words of Spanish or Portuguese go a long way! Most people in tourist areas speak English, but locals appreciate a simple "gracias" or "obrigado."

Slow down and soak it in. The best memories often come from wandering quiet side streets, lingering over coffee, or finding an unexpected plaza buzzing with life. Spain and Portugal are made for discovery.

Booking Flights
Adventure Fares recommends starting your fare search with easy-to-use search engines (like Google Flights) to locate the flight you’re wanting, dates and details. Then, after finding the flight details, we recommend booking the actual flights direct with the airlines. We also sometimes use travel services like Momondo.com, expedia.com, travelocity.com - and others. Booking with airlines directly is typically preferable, especially when problems occur (such as flight changes, delays, booking problems, etc).
BUDGET RESOURCES:
We typically go to Budget Your Trip to research budgeting! We highly recommend their website. They do a fantastic job of compiling data from thousands of travelers around the world! This data is so useful for anyone who’s wanting to make the most of their travel budget. If you sign up and enter your own expenses - you contribute to the data and also get to access their fantastic planning tools - with charts, maps, graphs, and tables of your trip finances.
